Melasma

Melasma

Melasma is a chronic pigmentation disorder that causes blotchy brown patches to appear on the skin. Melasma is most commonly seen on the face but can also appear on the body, especially in areas that are more exposed to sunlight e.g. shoulders, neck and forearms.

What causes Melasma?

It is not fully understood why Melasma occurs but the pigmentation is due to an overproduction of melanin by the melanocyte cells in the skin. It is more common in Fitzpatrick skin types 3 and 4, than other skin types.

What are the triggers?

  • Hormonal changes

  • Genetics

  • Sun exposure

  • Medications

  • Stress

  • Hypothyroidism
